Tenant rights and responsibilities | health and safety issues

The more that is learned about the environment, the more important it is to be conscious of certain health hazards. When you are looking through rental units/properties, it will be necessary to look for certain contaminants that could pose a serious threat to your overall health if you decide to rent a certain place.

Air Quality

There are lots of different things that can pose serious health hazards in a home or apartment, including certain types of molds and various chemical contaminants. People with allergies should be aware that neighboring units may pose a problem for them. When you are looking for mold in a unit that you are visiting, it is important to look for the following:

  • Stained, discoloured, or bubbling walls/ceilings
  • Musty smells
  • Mold and/or rotting wood on window sills

Keep in mind that if you have asthma or some other respiratory condition, a basement apartment may not be the best choice, as it can trigger these types of health problems.

Water Quality

The quality of the water that you have in your rental property is very important, so you will need to make sure that it is fully drinkable.
